During Jesus’ earthly ministry He showed concern for the poor, downtrodden, and marginalized. Scripture expresses Jesus fully understood the difficulties of the poor and was completely sensitive to their needs. Even though Jesus resided in heaven with the Father, He left heaven, emptied Himself, and became poor for the sake of the world (II Corinthians 8:9). Jesus had compassion on the multitudes and said to ask the Lord of the Harvest to send laborers in the harvest (Matthew 9:36-38). As Jesus saw the rich put their gifts into the treasury and the poor widow who gave her two mites, Jesus commented the rich gave out of their wealth and He praised the poor widow as she gave out of her poverty and gave all she had (Luke 21:4).
Those who are followers and lovers of Jesus should also show concern for the poor and the less fortunate. James said faith without works is dead. We are to assist those who are without clothes and food which keeps in line with the teachings and life style of Jesus and the disciples of His day (James 2:14-17).
